Lake Country SPCA was founded in September of 2002. We began as, and remain, a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue shelter in Mecklenburg County, Va.
Lake Country SPCA was originally run entirely by volunteers, and while volunteers are still our largest group of workers, we have recently hired two full time employees to assist us in caring for the more than 150 animals at our shelter.
Daily life at the shelter consists of cleaning dogs pens and cat cages, exercising the dogs, giving medications, grooming, socializing, adoptions, laundry, dishes, paperwork, carrying animals to and from the vet, and in the spring we have a large number of kittens who need to be syringe fed every two hours.
Lake Country SPCA is also working with the local elementary schools to educate children on the proper care of their pets and with the general public to educate about, and assist with, the spaying and neutering of their animals.
Throughout the year Lake Country SPCA also participates in several adoption events, such as Petsmart in Danville, LakeFest, Dogs Days of Summer and events we hold at the shelter itself. Please keep checking back in with us from time to time so you know where we'll be next.
In 2007 Lake Country SPCA found homes for almost 300 animals! We still have a long way to go before all shelters are empty, but thanks to all our volunteers, supporters and adopters we are well on the way.
