How do I adopt?  Adopting from Lake Country SPCA is relatively easy. After coming in,  visiting with the animals, and then choosing one. We have you fill out a form with your address, phone number, and name of your veterinarian. We also ask that you sign a waiver stating that you have never been charged with or found quilty of animal abandonment or abuse. We also give you a copy of the Virginia Animal Laws.
What are the costs?  Dog adoption fees are $75.00. This includes spay/neuter, worming, first and usually second vaccinations and rabies vaccination.  All shots are kept up to date, as well as worming.
Cat adoption fees are $40.00. As with dogs, spay/neuter, worming, rabies and at least first shots are done. If the cat is with us for 30 days, then second shots are done as well.
                                                                  Adoption Fees are Non-refundable
Should I bring anything with me? It's always a good idea to be prepared when choosing to adopt a new pet. If you are adopting a dog, we recommend bringing a leash and collar with you. At times we have some donated and we can pass these on to the adopter, but there isn't a guarantee that we'll have some on hand. A crate to transport the animal in would also be a good idea, but at the least, have a towel or blanket ready for your back seat.
If you are adopting a cat, you will definitely need a carrier of some kind with good ventilation. We will not
permit a cat to leave the shelter unless they are being transported safetly. In the event that you do not have your own carrier, we do have some available at a $5.00 charge.
Do you adopt out of state? We do adopt out of state. There are no special requirments either.
Can I adopt more than one animal?  Yes. Two animals can be adopted out to one  household in a 30 day period.  We have had requests, in the past, to take home more than two, however the transition is difficult on the animals and each one will need lots of attention and love to help it adjust. To try to do this on more than two animals is very difficult and usually ends with one or all of the animals being returned to the shelter.
Our goal is to make the transition as smooth on you and your new pet as we can. After the initial 30 day period if you decide you would like to adopt another animal, we will certainly be more than happy to work with you.
What if the animal and I don't click?  When you adopt from Lake Country SPCA we do our best to match you with an animal that fits what your looking for. However, at times, this does not always work out.  If you and your new pet are not clicking well, and we do ask that you give it at least a week to allow the animal to adjust, simply bring the animal back to the shelter. We will be more than happy to let you try out a new animal.  Our desire is for you and your new pet to be completely happy together.
