Incoming Animals
The Lake Country SPCA is dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, and abandonded animals. We are also here to find homes for adoptable animals. However, we only have the capacity to care for a certain number of animals based on space and financial resources.  Injured strays are always accepted.

We are always happy to take in animals as space becomes available. Before bringing an animal in, please contact us at 434-374-8076, to see if we have space available.

Before entering the SPCA program animals must meet certain requirements. These requirements are for the safety and well being of our staff members and volunteers.

Dogs must be friendly. Any dog that snaps or bites will not be accepted.

Cats must also be handleable. If we cannot hold the cat and touch it's ears, feet and belly without being bitten or scratched, the cat will not be accepted.  Sick cats will also not be accepted. At this time we do not have isolation and sick cats pose a large risk to the other cats in the shelter.
We do not recommend the trapping of  feral (wild) cats. These cats will not be accepted at the shelter and they pose a safety risk to those attempting to trap them.
At this time we are hoping to receive a Feral Cat Grant that will allow us to trap, neuter and rerelease the feral cats, but until then, the SPCA simply can not handle them.

There are times when we are asked to take in a family pet due to an upcoming move, new allergies and other reasons. Again, this is based on space. However, these animals must already be spayed/neutered and be up to date on all vaccinations. Proof of vaccinations (including rabies) and the spay/neuter certificate MUST accompany the animal. If these animals do not have vaccinations or are not spayed/neutered, the cost for that is to accompany the animals acceptance into our program. For Cats this is $40.00 and for Dogs it is $75.00.  Please call before attempting to bring your pet into the Lake Country SPCA to verify that we have space.  434-374-8076.

At this time we are able to take in only animals from Mecklenburg County.
